I think I've found an amazing answer to a unnecessary question: a home library catalog system. My excitement stems from the fact that an Apple computer is the most incredible tool in the world. If you haven't "switched" yet...do so as soon as possible.

There are numerous programs for book/DVD/CD cataloging, this one is free and incredibly easy to use. It is compatible with barcode scanners and is linked to web sites like Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and the Library of Congress. After entering the ISBN of the book (or scanning the bar code, from which the software captures the ISBN), all relevant information (including cover images) is instantly downloaded from one of these sources, sorted, and auto-entered into the appropriate field on that book's virtual catalog entry. There are a variety of output options, including the ability to post your library's contents to a web site. There are several other programs which I'm sure work well (including at least one that uses Apple's iSight webcam to scan the bar code and capture the ISBN), but I'm happy with Books.

Check it out.
